St Mary’s Church lies in a tranquil rural setting in Old Walditch, a five-minute drive from Bridport, and also serves the housing estate in Lower Walditch, with community activities in the village hall. We meet across the parish for a Parish Eucharist on the first Sunday of each month, but there is usually a sung Holy Communion or Morning Praise service on most other Sundays in St Mary's. Community events are held in the village centre; in church, the hall or on the Green.
As part of the parish's commitment to God's creation and the environment through our connections to EcoChurch and the award scheme set up by A Rocha, St Mary's has begun the journey and associated learning. The churchyard is part of the Living Churchyard project and is well maintained. Seating is provided for quiet reflection.
The current church was built in 1863 although records of a place of worship on the site date back to Tudor times. It’s a small building, seating about 70, and its memorials include one to the American GIs stationed in the village just before the D-Day Normandy landings in 1944. The church has a 12th-century font made of Purbeck stone, and beautiful corbels in the chancel carved to resemble foxgloves, ferns and blackberries.
